She said she would like to see the town become "really restrictive to protect surrounding residents." Select board member Melinda Collins said she was concerned about residents being exposed to "party homes," where a property is rented for the purpose of holding a large party or a promotional event. He said the question for the town is "do we want to be more restrictive or less restrictive."
"You have to live there" to engage in short-term rentals, Prondak said. Prondak said that under town by-laws, which were adopted before the growing short-term rental industry began, the rentals are allowed as a secondary use of the property in residential areas but not as a primary use, such as renting out an entire house for a weekend.
He said he has sent "cease and desist" letters to the owners of three properties, one of which has complied.
